NewTek Launches the Next Generation of the Desktop Video Revolution with The New Video Toaster for NT

Updated and improved version of the legendary video editing tool offers complete uncompressed non-linear video editing, 2D/3D animation and image manipulation for under $3,000.

LAS VEGAS (National Association of Broadcasters conference, Booth S3309) NewTek, manufacturer of industry-leading 3D animation and video production products, today introduced Video Toaster NT, the heir to the original Video Toaster, which initiated the desktop video revolution in 1990. The Video Toaster NT offers users at all levels a suite of tools for video creation including all essential components for video editing, compositing and 2D/3D animation. This uncompressed D1 (Composite, Component, Y/C) Windows NT solution provides a level of price/performance, quality and features unmatched in the industry. Superior to sophisticated systems that cost tens of thousands of dollars, Video Toaster NT is priced stunningly low ($2995) following NewTek's standard of revolutionary products at outrageous prices.

When we first introduced Video Toaster for the Amiga computer 10 years ago, it did what ëthey said couldnt be done: enable people to create video on inexpensive desktop computers that looked as good as professional level television.’ said Tim Jenison, founder and chairman of NewTek. ‘Video Toaster NT does more than simply make the same capabilities available for the mainstream Windows NT platform. Leveraging NewTeks dozen years of experience in the video and 3D markets, Video Toaster NT is a completely new, completely state-of-the-art video editing and manipulation environment ó in 2D and 3D, using uncompressed video.’

The Video Toaster NT Allows Complete Creative Freedom in 3 Dimensions
The Video Toaster NT allows users to manipulate their uncompressed video in many ways, including traditional 2D compositing, roto-scoping, 3D animation and modeling and editing. By merging video into a 3D compositing and animation environment, editors will find a new paradigm for video effects and manipulation. The quality and capabilities of Video Toaster NT are comparable or better to leading digital video editing systems on the market, most of which cost from $50,000 to $100,000.

Uncompressed Video, No compromise
The Video Toaster NT provides an uncompressed D1 (Composite, Component, Y/C) digital video solution typically associated with extremely expensive video systems. High-end facilities know that uncompressed digital video is an essential component to the video editing process. Most compression-based systems have been relegated to the industrial and corporate video segments due to restrictions to the number of layers and quality degradation associated with multi-pass compression. All compressed systems produce unwanted artifacts. Because Video Toaster NT utilizes uncompressed video, users can infinitely layer video without any concern for these artifacts. This is currently a major separation between high-end and mid range systems. The Video Toaster NT will bring that ultra high-end sophistication to users at all levels at an unprecedented price point.

Powerful Editing Capabilities

Video Toaster NT includes one of the most powerful editing applications in the industry:

In:syncs Speed Razor VTE (Video Toaster Enhanced). This editing application offers:

  • a project timeline that lets users easily create professional video projects containing unlimited layers of video, audio, still image files and animation
  • the ability to capture, edit and output to uncompressed video and other video formats, including ASF for video streaming on the Web and multimedia AVIs

comprehensive 2D compositing system

graphical workspace for digital media content management

real-time on-screen preview of video edits

power character generator (CG)

3D and 2D Tools of the Trade

In addition to its video editing and manipulation capabilities, Video Toaster NT also comes with two other stellar NewTek products: LightWave VT, based on the leading 3D animation software for major broadcast and movie productions, and Aura, a 2D paint program optimized for animation and video layering.

LightWave VT
LightWave VT brings video professionals into the dynamic realm of 3D animation and video effects. 3D has rapidly become an essential part of video production. Currently only ultra high-end solutions carry the 3D element into their video product line. With the introduction of the Video Toaster NT, a substantially wider range of users will find the limitless power 3D can bring to the video editing process. No longer is 3D limited to creating dinosaurs and aliens, 3D animation is invaluable in day to day video augmentation.

Aura
In addition to the 3D component, traditional 2D manipulation is still essential to the video creation process. NewTek
s Aura, a paint, 2D animation, rotoscoping and video layering system, is integrated into the Video Toaster NT system to deliver complete control of the uncompressed D1 video stream. Users can import segments of uncompressed digital video for touch up, processing and other manipulation. Due to Auras high-speed nature, users will find painting on video frames extremely efficient. By adding an ultra powerful brushing engine to the mix, NewTek allows users to paint original work or simply add an element to existing footage.

A Toaster Built to Last
The Video Toaster NT was designed to last for years to come. Similar to the original Video Toaster, which is still in production 10 years after its launch, the Video Toaster NT utilizes a hardware system that leverages highly tuned software and the systems processor. The true power of the system comes from the proprietary software designed to create magic without the use of expensive video cards or bulky external hardware. By merging software and hardware, the Video Toaster NT can be upgraded and expanded well beyond current systems. NewTek will be adding modules for a real time 16 input switcher, storyboard editing, real time 3D DVE, chroma keying, serial D1 interface, and other components to be announced.

Price and Availability
Video Toaster NT, which is scheduled to ship in June 1999, will retail for $2,995.00. It will be available worldwide through NewTek
s distribution channel. Minimum system requirements for running Video Toaster NT are a Windows NT-based system with a Pentium 266 processor, 128 MB of RAM and a drive system capable of 22 MB/sec. The recommended system configuration is a Windows NT-based system with a Pentium III processor, 256 MB of RAM and a drive system capable of 22 MB/sec.
