API Demos Gigahertz Speed At PC Expo: Industry's First At Room Temperature

NEW YORK -- Alpha Processor, Inc. (API) debuted the world's first room temperature 1GHz processor on the show floor of PC Expo. This technology demonstration marks a significant milestone for the microprocessor industry, as this is the first public display of a full function 1GHz microprocessor with no special cooling enhancements made to the system.

This technology demonstration further highlights the strong partnership between API and its Alpha CPU manufacturing partner Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., with fabrication facilities in Kiheung, Korea.

"This is truly an exciting demonstration for API, Samsung and quite frankly the industry as whole," said KP Suh, the Samsung general manager for CPU business. "Alpha is known for its performance and we are committed to continuing its leadership position. Running Alpha at a GHz frequency with no strings attached is a significant proof point of that commitment and equally important demonstrates our advanced VLSI process and manufacturing capabilities."

The technology demonstration will showcase the 1 GHz Alpha processor incorporated in API's new Alpha Slot B packaging technology running on API's new dual processor platform, UP2000. Alpha Slot B technology enables API to produce higher-frequency Alpha processors, while lowering production costs and providing investment protection for Alpha system buyers.

"The GHz demonstration is a true testament to our manufacturing partner, Samsung," stated Jeff Borkowski, API vice president of marketing. "This industry-first showcase of any microprocessor running 1 GHz frequency at room temperature validates our belief the boundaries of microprocessor technology will continue to expand, especially for Alpha." Borkowski added "Having also announced at PC Expo the Alpha 750MHz 21264, the world's fastest commercially available 64-bit processor, API is poised to be at the forefront of the enterprise computing industry. We will continue to push the technology envelope and offer our customers superior Alpha-based solutions at prices never seen before for Alpha."

Also at PC Expo, API will show the latest in their series of Ultimate Performance motherboards, the UP2000 and UP1000 (see related release). Both demonstrate API's commitment to lower price points for Alpha solutions by leveraging x86 economies of scale for platform design and components. The UP2000 is commercially available now and the UP1000 will be available in Q3 of 1999.
