SRS Labs, Inc., one of the world?s leading providers of audio enhancement technology, today announced that Mainichi Broadcasting System Inc. (?MBS?), a key television station in Japan, produced the live broadcast of the nationally-renowned Yomiuri Giants vs. Hanshin Tigers game in SRS Circle Surround 5.1 (?CS?). The game, which was televised last Friday, was held in Koshien Stadium, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, and was broadcast throughout Japan via the 28 national network stations of Tokyo Broadcasting System, Inc., ?TBS.? During the game, the SRS CS logo was prominently displayed on screen, informing viewers that they were enjoying the game in SRS Circle Surround.
Earlier this year, MBS introduced SRS CS to Japanese sports fans when they broadcast all 32 matches of the 77th National High School Baseball Invitational Tournament in SRS Circle Surround. MBS selected SRS CS because they recognized the technology as an ideal surround sound solution for live sports programming. By using SRS CS, broadcasters can transmit the audio sensation of the live event directly to the viewer by using industry-standard stereo broadcasting as a carrier for surround sound. The patented CS technology allows professional audio engineers to encode up to 6.1 channels of discrete audio for distribution or broadcast over existing two-channel carriers such as SD and HD television, analog and digital radio, streaming media, CDs and VHS tapes.
?During the high school baseball invitational tournament, we fully recognized that SRS Circle Surround had a high capability of producing 5.1 channel surround sound even over a two-channel format for live sports programs,? said Mr. Shuji Ueno, sports technical director, technical department, MBS. ?Our great success with the SRS technology at that time supported our decision in choosing to broadcast this highly popular main attraction, Giants vs. Tigers game, in SRS Circle Surround. It was the first professional baseball game in Japan to be broadcast in this way. I hope our audiences enjoyed SRS Circle Surround as the powerful, immersive surround experience that it is.?
SRS CS encoding is backward compatible with all playback systems, including mono and stereo formats. Listeners of the MBS? broadcasts who have a Circle Surround or other matrix surround decoder installed, will hear a stunning 5.1 surround sound experience, while those listening over regular two-speaker stereo systems will hear the broadcast in enhanced stereo. This program, and others like it, not only contributes to the growing demand by consumers for SRS CS content, but also for consumer electronic products with SRS CS decoders, as well as the SRS brand in general. For audio enthusiasts looking for Circle Surround II decoding technology, it is currently available from manufacturers such as Marantz, Accuphase, Pioneer, Theta Digital, Motorola and Yamaha.
?We are honored that Mainichi Broadcasting Systems has again chosen to broadcast such a highly popular sporting event in SRS Circle Surround,? said Hank Kato, regional manager for SRS Labs, Inc. ?Circle Surround is a particularly powerful tool for live sports programming, where the audio challenge is to give the television audience an experience that rivals watching an event live. We look forward to many more broadcasting events such as this.?
To date, over 500 million television viewers have experienced Circle Surround, and over 300,000 DVDs and CDs have been distributed that include SRS CS. The technology continues to be a popular choice for broadcasters and professional audio mixers due to its flexibility, ease-of-use, and overall audio performance. Top television broadcasters in the United States and abroad, who have transmitted Circle Surround-encoded programs include ABC, CBS, NBC, ESPN, ESPN 2, ESPN HD, FOX, FX, TNT, PBS for dozens of programs including the 55th Annual Prime Time Emmy Awards, X Games, NFL and NBA broadcasts, and more.
