Don Gilmore Uses Royer Microphones for Spider-Man 2 Tracks Dashboard Confessional and Train for Spider-Man 2 soundtrack (November 15, 2004)

Unquestionably one of the biggest movie hits of 2004, Sony Pictures? Spider-Man 2, starring Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, and Alfred Molina as the notorious, multi-appendage Dr. Otto Octavius, captured the hearts and imagination of children and adults alike. In addition to the stellar performances of its leading characters, the film also generated rave reviews for its soundtrack. Supplemental to Danny Elfman?s score, there are a number of tracks performed by other artists, two of which were recorded by producer Don Gilmore at NRG Recording in North Hollywood, California using Royer Labs? phantom powered SF-24 and R-122 ribbon microphones.

While NRG Recording has certainly seen its share of orchestral tracks, the studio is better known as one of rock?s premiere facilities in the greater Los Angeles area. Avril Lavigne, Evanescence, Korn, Limp Bizkit and Hoobastank have all recorded at the studio. Of particular note, Gilmore produced Linkin Park?s Hybrid Theory and Meteora there. Among the various songs that are part of Spider-Man 2?s soundtrack, Gilmore produced Dashboard Confessional?s Vindicated, and Train?s Ordinary at NRG.

?The studio had recently acquired Royers? SF-24,? noted Gilmore, ?and after trying the mic out, I absolutely loved it! I used it on my sessions with both Dashboard Confessional and Train. The SF-24 has a great top end. This mic sounds really good for many different instruments and applications.? Gilmore also used Royer R-122s as drum room microphones and to record electric guitars.

As a stereo ribbon microphone, the Royer SF-24 is actually two matched ribbon microphones placed one above the other, each aimed 45 degrees from center in the classic Blumlein configuration. The SF-24?s stereo capability makes it a great choice for drum overheads, brass, string, and woodwind sessions, piano, ensembles and other applications where stereo recording is desired. Royer's phantom powered ribbon microphones perform well with a much greater variety of mic preamplifiers, as the gain and impedance-matching issues of non-powered ribbons are solved via Royer's proprietary electronics.

Dashboard Confessional?s discography includes album releases on the Vagrant, Fiddler, and Eulogy labels. Band members include Chris Carrabba, Scott Shoenbeck, John Lefler, and Mike Marsh. Train is signed with Columbia / Sony Music Entertainment. The band members include Pat Monahan, Charlie Colin, Jimmy Stafford, and Scott Underwood.
