VFX Whiz Mike Morasky Visits Art Institute SF

Students hear secrets behind Matrix and LOTR projects (March 05, 2004)
Bay Area students were recently treated to some behind-the-scenes animation and visual effects secrets used in creating The Matrix: Revolutions during a special March 3 presentation at The Art Institute of California San Francisco.

Mike Morasky, a visual effects expert who worked on two of The Matrix films, as well as on The Lord of The Rings trilogy, was on hand to give a talk about visual effects and animation for feature films. He explained some of the challenges in creating highly intricate scenes, discussed the choice of software tools and pipeline design, and talked about some of the similarities and differences in working on The Lord of The Rings and The Matrix projects. Morasky also showed clips from The Matrix: Revolutions and discussed his teams work on the sentinel swarm scenes in the film. At the end, he answered questions from the audience of students and effects fans.

Morasky was the Sentinel Swarm Lead for The Matrix: Revolutions at ESC Entertainment, a visual effects company in Alameda, Calif. He also worked on The Matrix: Reloaded. He was first a Shot Development Lead and then a Lead FX Technical Director. Before working at ESC Entertainment, Morasky was working with WETA on the visual effects for The Lord of the Rings trilogy. He was a Senior Massive Crowd T.D. during pre-production for all three LOTR films and then Lead Massive Crowd T.D. for the The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

The event was hosted by the schools ACM SIGGRAPH Student Chapter, formed by animation students last year as the first ACM SIGGRAPH Student Chapter in the state of California.

?Mike gave us an interesting and detailed view on how such a massive production actually gets pulled off, said Star La Land, a student at the school and upcoming chairperson of the schools Student SIGGRAPH Chapter. ?This is the kind of event we like to provide for students to give them an inside view on the industries theyll be going into, and helps us connect more with industry professionals.

Students in the schools Media Arts & Animation, Game Art & Design and Visual & Game Programming degree programs were on hand to host the event. These programs teach skills needed for entry-level positions within the animation and game industries. The Art Institute of California San Francisco developed its programs in consultation with industry professionals from leading animation, visual effects and game development companies from throughout California.
