Scoring with VASST TrakPaks

Use the audio tools you already know and you can create exactly the kind of music that impacts your audience By Jeffrey P. Fisher

In the post-production suite, clients continue to ask editors to work miracles on their less than stellar budgets. Music is one such area where great impact gets requested, but the resources available to pull a decent score together are minimal.

Most of us turn to production library music, but there are some major drawbacks to these tracks. They are usually fixed in duration and elements and donít lend themselves to customization. On the other end is a DIY approach such as using Sony Acid to compose your own music. While this offers the ultimate in customization in timing, tempo, and instrumentation, it does require some skill and effort to pull off effective scores.

Sitting in-between these two extremes are VASST TrakPaks (www.vasst.com). As product manager for these modular royalty-free music packages, Iím excited to tell you about how TrakPak themes and variations can be mixed and matched with ease to build custom soundtracks with the duration, timing, and instrumentation variations you need.

Currently, there are six volumes available: Piano & Pads, Guitar & Pads, Static Impulse, Volume 1, Hall of Shadows, and Modern Incidentals, Volumes 1 and 2. Coming soon are Static Impulse Volume 2 and Black Tie Piano.

Files come as 16-bit/48kHz files on a DVD, perfect for use in any NLE HDV/DV project or with any Digital Audio Workstation (DAW).  I recommend you copy the files to your stock media hard drive for the best performance rather than using them straight from the disc.

Itís important to note that there are two kinds of TrakPaks: Tonal and Scoring. All Tonal Series are similarly presented, such as whatís on the Piano & Pads volume:

  • Endings in both 90 Beats per minute (BPM) and 120 BPM
  • Intros Ė in both tempos
  • Full Arrangements Ė again in both tempos
  • Section Blocks Ė at 90 BPM and 120 BPM
  • And Extra Bonus Percussion Loops

Modern Incidentals 1 & 2 are the only scoring volumes currently available and they come structured a little differently:

  • Building Blocks (Full Cue Loops, Instrument Only Cues , and Rhythm Only Cues)
  • Complete Cues
  • Hits and Accents
  • Extra Bonus Backgrounds
