Announcing the Winners of DIGs Dream Development Project Contest!

Every game developer has a dream development project -- the one he’s always wanted to work on … if he only had the right tools at hand. Last month, DIG readers submitted their dream projects for the chance to win an Intel Core i7-2600K processor. Our expert panel of judges picked these as their favorites:

The Winners

Eric, Silver Spring, Md.
Think Minecraft, but with space travel. You would start on a generated planet, and from mining could build and upgrade a spaceship to travel in space to other celestial bodies. Each planet would be a 3D sphere (think Mario Galaxy) with its own climate and resources to mine. There would also be other space objects -- such as comets, asteroids, and moons -- to explore.

“A new Dungeon Crawler, like Baldur’s Gate and Champions of Norrath: Realms of Everquest. I was completely lost in those games and I haven’t really found a game on console to mimic it to at least catch my interest. Yes, they were on the console. But so what? They started on PCs. I am going to dig them out and start playing them again.

I am a digital media artist, currently developing a zombie-genre game called No More Room in Hell (NoMoreRoomInHell.com ). I also do Web development and post-production compositing for the film industry. This work requires a great deal of CPU for rendering models or images that are millions of polygons heavy, and a better processor would lower the render time, increasing efficiency and overall workflow as well as preventing system crashes when processing that info.

I’ve dreamed of developing my own game. I would sketch, plan and design all of its core aspects, engines, characters, etc. Two years ago, I outlined a game plan: a side-scrolling fighter game I called Batillion. It would’ve run through JavaScript and used Adobe’s Motion Sketch technology. Sadly, I hadn’t the tools, the money or the team to help make this dream a reality.

Matt Ployhar focuses on graphics, multimedia and gaming in Intel’s visual computing software division. Prior to that, he worked at Microsoft for more than 12 years. His passions are graphics and gaming. When he can get away from his computer, he also enjoys the great outdoors and reading.

Gus Mastrapa is a freelance writer from Apple Valley, Calif., with almost 10 years of experience in the games industry. His work has appeared in Wired, Edge, Variety and countless online publications.
