Sullivan Street Press Takes Scags at 7 Video Project to the Brooklyn Book Festival

Having traveled 9,000 miles this summer, Sullivan Street Press spent much time meeting new readers for the book series, Scags. Along the way, a number of people were videoed reading from the book. Each reader was asked to read a 2 minute segment from the book and was then given a free copy in gratitude for help with the project.

This Sunday, the pair, Deborah Emin and Suzanne Pyrch, will roll into Brooklyn with books to distribute and the camera ready to video some of the 40,000 participants in the 7-year-old Brooklyn Book Festival.

The Brooklyn Book Festival is hosting 280 writers this year who will be participating in readings, discussions and performances. From 10 am to 6 pm, in and around Brooklyn Borough Hall, writers, book lovers and publishers will be the targets of Pyrch and Emin, scouring the crowd for willing participants for the ongoing video project.

Scags at 7 is the first volume in a projected 4-volume series. In this novel, Scags is 7 years old and home during her summer vacation between 2nd and 3rd grade. Told in her voice, she recounts the events as she understands them that lead up to her fathers breakdown and attempted suicide. Set in 1958 Skokie, IL, the story comes alive because of the voice that sounds much like a child of the 1950s would have sounded.

Recording the voices of so many people reading her words as she records them, Emin has this to say:

You never know what someone else will make of your work as they read it to themselves. But watching each reader through the little screen of my camera pronounce and project the sentences I wrote has been a very exciting experience. It reinforced that the voice I heard when writing others can hear as well.

Pyrch and Emin will be visible to all, by wearing special t-shirts announcing the projects. Guerilla marketing at its most inventive, it is also a means to connect lots of people with a book series not yet completed.
