Slip Trim to Fit Music in Vegas Pro

Use the handy Slip Trim mode in Sony Vegas to be more efficient By Jeffrey P. Fisher

One advantage to being a Sony Vegas Pro user is how efficient the software makes you. By learning a few keyboard shortcuts, you can finish your projects faster.

For example, you may have a piece of music that's too long for the video sequence. How do you get it to fit quickly?

Hover your mouse in the middle of the music Event and hold down the Alt key. The cursor changes to a box with a double-sided arrow inside. Drag the mouse to the left and you adjust the audio inside without moving either edge. This is known as 'Slip Trim' editing and it's useful in a lot of different situations.

Use slip trim to line up the music's ending with the video fade-out. Notice that the music restarts again. To trim away this excess use the new Vegas Pro 9 Event split or split/trim keyboard shortcut: Alt+Ctrl+Shift+Click. Normally you have to select a Timeline event, position the playhead cursor where you want to make an edit, and then press the 'S' key to split the video at the cursor. That's too much work!

Now you can simply hold down Alt+Ctrl+Shift simultaneously and click anywhere you want to make a split edit. This new shortcut is a fantastic timesaver and worth learning.

After making the split, hit the Delete key to eliminate the excess music. Splitting any event always selects the piece to the right of the split. Add a simple fade-out to the music to match the video and now your music matches the video's duration.

Learning a new shortcut or two can truly speed up your workflow. The best way to master the two featured here is simple: use them! Put a sticky note reminder on your monitor and begin putting them into service. Soon they will become part of your Vegas Pro routine.
