Singer Clara's 'Parasite' Music Video Shot with Blackmagic URSA Mini 4K by TruLove Post

In the music video for her single "Parasite," singer Clara takes a unique approach. The song is about a girl who repeatedly tries to steal her friends' lovers, like bees who try to steal the honey bee's honey. Clara uses the music video not as a storyline for the lyrics, but as a message and a warning to the offending girl, while also expressing the feelings and confusion one goes through when trying to understand why someone would act that way.

As Co-director, Editor and Colorist on the project, Voltron (aka Christian Castagna) of L.A.-based post-production boutique TruLove Post, chose the Blackmagic URSA Mini 4K to shoot the video, with color grading completed using DaVinci Resolve Studio.

Voltron explained, "After some research, I felt the URSA Mini 4K was the best option for me. I liked the fact that the camera comes with DaVinci Resolve Studio, which is something that I've been interested in learning. And we wanted the best quality image for this project. I've been shooting small stuff for a while, and this music video was the perfect project to finally show the potential of the URSA Mini 4K."

Using a set of 18mm, 35mm, 50mm and 85mm Zeiss Compact Prime lenses, the majority of the music video was shot handheld to ensure that it had a realistic look.

"The URSA Mini 4K's great picture quality combined with the lenses we used made the music video look great at an affordable price," said Voltron. "Given the camera's low profile, we were able to shoot in public places without a problem, and most of the video was shot at 48 fps. The URSA Mini 4K has a very good slow motion feel. I think this is a great camera at a great value."

Creating the Look in Post
While Voltron did not have a specific look in mind going into post, DaVinci Resolve Studio gave him the ability to play around and experiment with different looks and options. "The camera comes with DaVinci Resolve Studio for free, so I started experimenting with it since it was a new program for me. It was very beneficial having access to a great tool for color correction," he said.

From a subway train at night, to a dimly lit living room, to a graffitied wall, the music video showcases a variety of interesting and visually-exciting backdrops, and each new location grabs the viewers' attention and transports them along with Clara as she tells her message.

"DaVinci Resolve Studio helped us in a lot of ways," explained Voltron. "The scene with the deer antlers in the background was shot specifically so we could add a black vignette in order to bring the viewer's attention to the center of the image, and DaVinci Resolve Studio has the features to accomplish that in a user friendly way."

Voltron also noted that DaVinci Resolve Studio's 3D tracker was very helpful, especially with the numerous Power Windows they created to help finesse the look. The tracking is automatic, so Voltron didn't have to spend time generating key frames, and the tracker can also be used for image stabilization and shot clean up.

"The scene on the subway platform and train was shot with no lights at all, just the ones on the train. Most of the video was shot with natural light, and Resolve made it easy to make adjustments to any look," said Voltron. "The train's natural light was flat, but with Resolve, I was able to create Power Windows and vignettes to create depth and contrast."

The final product is a very nice desaturated, blue-ish look that Voltron and his team were all very pleased with.

"Creating something from scratch and seeing it come to life is very gratifying, and the URSA Mini 4K and DaVinci Resolve Studio helped make that possible," concluded Voltron.
