Second International Service Design + Tourism Conference Call for Papers Opens Today(May 17, 2013)

The Call for Papers for the Second International Service Design + Tourism Conference, to be held at Ringling College of Art and Design on November 7-9, is now open. The Conference, also known as SDT 2013, will convene designers from various disciplines, travel and tourism industry professionals, and faculty and graduate students from tourism and hospitality, design, and business schools to explore the practical application of service design in the tourism industry.
Were excited to offer this opportunity for professionals from the international tourism and service design communities to connect, share, and learn at SDT 2013, said Dr. Larry R. Thompson, president of Ringling College of Art and Design. Our goal is to attract a wide variety of proposals from people with academic, business, design, and consulting backgrounds, and hear best practices as well as new ideas for transforming tourism and service experiences.
The SDT 2013 Conference Board is seeking submissions of practical case studies and industry reports, academic research papers, and methods and tools in service design, e.g. for researching, ideating, prototyping, or implementing tourism services. Pecha kucha presentations and workshop proposals are also welcome.
Ringling College is partnering with Management Center Innsbruck (MCI), the host of the inaugural Service Design Tourism Conference, to produce the event. SDT 2012, held in Austria last August, drew attendees from across the globe who shared an interest in the practical application of service design thinking within the travel and tourism industry. The conference was the closing event of the project Service Design in Tourism, funded by the European Union under the CIP Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme.
We decided to keep the theme of this years event broad to encourage the submission of a wide range of proposals on service design topics and the creation of exemplary customer experiences in tourism, said Marc Stickdorn, research fellow and Lecturer in the School of Tourism Business Studies at MCI and a member of the SDT 2013 Conference Board. We envision these presentations as springboards for further collaboration among attendees.
Among the suggestions for topics sought from prospective presenters are:
- Service design for specific tourism sectors (e.g. tourism destinations, hospitality services, food & beverage, spas, transportation, events, resorts, attractions, etc.)
- Involving stakeholders (e.g. employees, suppliers, etc.) in service design and delivery
- Improving customer experience with digital services
- How to introduce simple service design methods in small and medium sized enterprises
- New methods and tools in service design
- What can tourism learn from other industries regarding service design?
- What can service design learn from tourism?

Selected presenters will be notified by August 12. The six best academic submissions will be invited to publish a full paper in the Journal of Vacation Marketing.
