Online Dating Site Strives to Build Offline Community with Unique Live Event in New York City

  (September 12, 2012)

New York, NY (PRWEB) September 12, 2012

The online dating industry is beginning to realize that algorithms and databases may only go so far. More and more sites are offering live events for their users. StrangeAngels.com is a new dating site that wants to take that trend several steps forward. It starts on their website, where volunteer "Matchmakers," which could be friends, family or strangers, help each other connect. On September 23, they will meet at Public Assembly in Brooklyn to help each other in person.

"If you want to solve the problem, you have to understand the problem," said StrangeAngels.com founder Zachary Leven. "And the root of the problem isn't determining compatibility, or finding the right photo for your profile. It's a lack of community. If we know more people, and help each other more, we'll have an easier time finding a relationship. With enough community, the relationship may even find you."

Leven created the website after he tried online dating and found that other sites merely offered unhelpful technology schemes that failed to address the inherent difficulties of looking for a companion. The search for a new love, he realized, should not be conducted the same way we search for a new pair of sneakers. Combining his background as both a web developer and a human rights activist, he set out to create a new type of dating site using the best resource of all -- people. StrangeAngels.com is the result.

On September 23, they're bringing the venture offline and into the real world, which Leven sees as crucial to the process. "A lot of dating sites have these meetups," Leven noted. "But it's either speed dating, or hanging out at the bar. And in both cases, you're totally on your own. People need more help than that. We're going to help each other."

Leven emphasizes that the website itself is a huge advancement. The site is open to absolutely everybody. Even people not looking for a relationship may join and volunteer to help others. They developed open-source tools that allow for users to collaborate in unique ways. But the site is only half the equation. StrangeAngels.com plans to run these recurring live events designed to help bring people together. And like the website, the events aren't just for singles. StrangeAngels.com believes a connection can come from anywhere, and a lot of people want to help their friends, so all are welcome. Most of the people involved with running the website are musicians, artists, and writers, and they say they have quite a creative evening planned.

Public Assembly is located at 70 North 6 St, Brooklyn, NY, 11211. StrangeAngels.com was founded by Zachary Leven. For more information, visit strangeangels.com.
