Narconon Georgia Delivers Holiday Drug Education Targeted at Staying Safe During the Season(December 20, 2012)
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) December 20, 2012
Narconon of Georgia, a drug rehabilitation and drug education center, has stepped up its efforts to provide youth and families drug education during the holidays targeting staying safe during the season.
In recent weeks, hundreds of children learned about the dangers of drugs through interactive drug education. In one Dekalb County school, Narconon presenters learned from the teachers that the major drug of abuse was marijuana and that some of the families of the children were smoking crack.
One class of 300 learned about the dangers of both drugs. The children were taught refusal skills through role playing and discovered there were several ways they could be comfortable in telling their friends that they didnt want to use drugs.
The dangers of methamphetamine portion of the training taught the group the dangers of the different chemicals in methamphetamine. Would you take the battery out of the pencil sharper and eat it? asked the presenter. The answer was a resounding, NO!
One child asked, What is the worst drug that someone could ever do? The answer from the presenter was The first one you ever try.
Presenter, Ji Johnson stated, It is all about knowing the consequences. Once these are fully understood, children are willing to overcome peer pressure to do drugs.
Another class of 8th graders learned about marijuana and synthetic drugs. One Narconon program graduate told his story of addiction. All the students were surveyed and 100% stated that they didnt want to do drugs after the lecture. Some survey responses were, This lecture has reassured me that I will never do drugs. I am going to remember what I was taught and never do drugs. Ill make sure my friends dont either.
Gordon Weinand, Director of Community Affairs, stated, The average age for first time abusers of drugs is 13 to 14 and every day, 1500 kids try drugs for the first time. These are scary statistics. We are dedicated to empowering kids so they can freely refuse drugs any time they are offered. It is important that drug education is provided through schools, as most parents dont expect that their child could be exposed to drugs at such a young age. It is equally important to educate the parents which we often do through radio shows.
Narconon drug education has reached thousands of people across the country through radio shows and public service announcements during the holiday season. We want to provide a holiday message of hope and safety for people of all ages, said Weinand. Amidst all the holiday parties and promotion, we want our message to stand out for those who need to hear it. Stay safe. Dont over-indulge. And if you are influenced in any way by addiction, we are here to help, during what can be for many, a difficult time of year.
