Alumni Mark the 60th Anniversary of the First African American Graduate at the Nations Oldest Public University
(October 22, 2012)(PRWEB) October 22, 2012
Angela Ray of Angela Ray International LLC will emcee the Light on the Hill Scholarship Banquet on Friday, November 9, 2012, at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel in Chapel Hill. The banquet is just one of the events of the Black Alumni Reunion at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Held annually since 2005, the banquet serves as a tribute to Carolinas earliest African American graduates. Founding members of the scholarship contributed $1952.00 each, representing the 1952 class year of Harvey Beech, UNCs first black graduate.
NFL star and UNC graduate Julius Peppers donated $250,000 to the scholarship fund on August 18, 2012. In 2009, he made his first gift of $100,000 to the scholarship fund which created the LOTH Peppers scholarship.
I am very honored and humbled to be selected as this years emcee of such a historic and important event, Ray said. Honestly, I just love Carolina, so I always welcome any opportunity to come back and serve.
She came highly recommended, said Rita Joyner, event organizer for the scholarship banquet. Joyner, a graduate of the School of Education at UNC, has worked with the Light on the Hill Scholarship Banquet for several years.
No stranger to being in front of an audience, Ray is speaker, actress, and author. While at UNC, she majored in Radio, Television, Motion Pictures and Speech Communication. Since graduating she has gone on to inspire audiences from coast to coast. In addition, she has landed roles in television and films including the hit television shows, One Tree Hill and Dawsons Creek.
Because of the efforts of Beech and those who integrated the law school with him, UNC today boasts a number of very successful African-American alumni including:
- Paula Newsome, the first African-American woman optometrist to open a practice in North Carolina;
- Kwame Jackson, owner of Krimson by Kwame and finalist on the first season of The Apprentice;
- Rick Fox, actor and former NBA player;
- Patricia Timmons Goodson, the first African American woman to sit on North Carolinas highest court;
- Stuart Scott, ESPN analyst;
- Michael Jordan, arguably one of the best basketball players of all time, just to name a few.
This years honorees for the Light on the Hill Scholarship Banquet include James A. Garris (class of 1969), Robert M. Seldon, III (class of 1994), Keith A. Sutton (class of 1992), Anita B. Walton (class of 1992), and Kenneth A. Ward (class of 1984). The Outstanding Faculty/Staff Award will be given to Vergie A. Taylor.
