ASQ Education Team Excellence Award Finalists Announced

Six teams from K12 and higher education institutions have been named finalists in the Education Team Excellence Recognition Awards. The awards, which showcase the nations most outstanding improvement efforts, will be presented at the 20th annual National Quality Education Conference sponsored by ASQ.
Live finalist presentations will take place during the conference from Sunday, Nov. 11 to Monday, Nov. 12 at the Hyatt Regency in Louisville, Ky. The award ceremony is Monday, Nov. 12. This years finalists include:
Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation, Evansville, Ind. Project: Improving Customer Satisfaction During the First Week of School in the Office of Transportation - Monday, Nov. 12, 9:45 a.m. 11:00 a.m. This project focused on improving service in the bus transportation office during the first week of school, while increasing customer satisfaction and adhering to the strategic plan. This involved streamlining the way students are enrolled and routed. This process has been the springboard for operational excellence in the Office of Transportation.
Kaneland Schools, Maple Park and Sugar Grove, Ill. (3 teams)
- Project: Response to Intervention: A Successful Approach to Reading Instruction (Sugar Grove) - Sunday, Nov. 11, 11:15 a.m. 12:30 p.m. This session will focus on the ins and outs of creating a culture of accountability among all staff, using data to guide all instructional decisions, and determining a structure of instructional success for all students in reading. The RTI Team will share their journey in creating an RTI reading structure that has proven to be successful for hundreds of students.
- Project: Meeting the Needs of All Learners Through Flexible Grouping in Math (Sugar
- Project: An Approach to Wrap-around Student Support Through Process Management (Maple Park) - Monday, Nov. 12, 11:15 a.m. 12:30 p.m. This session will demonstrate a revolution to the traditional resource study hall concept to meet student and staff needs across all segments. The team developed an integrated resource center to incorporate study skills, staff support, and assessment support in special education services and used process management to guide and track testing accommodations in a student-centered supportive environment.
Ramaiah Institute of Management Studies Bangalore, India Project: Employability Sunday, Nov. 11, 1:30 p.m. 2:45 p.m. Studies show that only about 25 percent of graduate students are employable after graduation. This project will demonstrate how quality methods can be instrumental in helping to close the achievement gap and help ensure these students are gaining skills that match industry expectations.
Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N.J. Project: Using the Tools of Six Sigma to Teach Six SigmaA Case Study of Applying DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) to a Heterogeneous Student Population - Sunday, November 11, 9:45 a.m. 11:00 a.m. The project established a Six Sigma Green Belt course using tools, techniques and methods of Lean Six Sigma to help an academically and professionally diverse group pass the ASQ Certified Six Sigma Green Belt exam. It followed DMAIC as a roadmap through the material and a methodology to instruction by using the tools to improve the exam process.
The Education Team Excellence Recognition Process recognizes teams who are improving educational outcomes, stakeholder involvement and school quality. Past honorees have used the plan, do, study, act (PDSA) method and other tools to improve math scores, close the achievement gap between schools and lower employee healthcare costs by operating a highly efficient medical center within a school district. During the conference, the nine finalist teams will showcase their projects successes. Its a great opportunity to learn from other educators best practices.
