1862 David Walleys Commemorates 150 Years with Civil War Days

1862 David Walleys Hot Springs Resort and Spa will commemorate its sesquicentennial September 14th and 15th featuring reenactors from the Civil War era.

The celebration kicks off Friday, September 14th with a field trip for local students who will enjoy live history lessons from the Comstock Civil War Reenactors, the Pony Express Association and the Badges, Bandits and Bloomers.

Friday evening, the public is invited to step back in time at Harriets Civil War Dinner and Ball. The event will feature the Butterfield Brass Band and the Comstock Civil War Reenactors as they demonstrate Civil War era waltzes, led by their Ball Master. The public is invited to participate in this free event; period dress is optional. For those who prefer to watch rather than waltz, there will be a 3-course prix fixe dinner overlooking the ball. Featuring food from the era, dinner choices include: cornmeal crusted trout with white cheddar grits and succotash; chicken fried venison paired with mashed potatoes and creamy gravy with sage and bacon; or stewed chicken with wild mushrooms and dumplings. Two dinner seatings are available. The first is at 5:30pm and the second at 7:30 pm. The 3 course dinner is $35, call 1-888-RES-1862 to reserve your dinner seats. The free ball will kick off with the Grand March at 7:30 pm.

Saturday presents a full day of living history, with presentations and performances by the Badges, Bandits and Bloomers, the old west reenactors bring to life some the regions most famous and infamous lawmen, outlaws and ladies including early Genoa settler Henry Van Sickle, U.S. Deputy Marshall John L. Blackburn and Chief of the Comstock, Langford Farner Peel. The Pony Express Association will re-enact a mail exchange, since 1862 David Walleys is located on the original Pony Express Route. Recounting the eerie experiences of his duty, Pony Express Rider Warren Upson will present the Sensational Hauntings of the Carson Valley.

Known as the toughest and deadliest gunman of his day, Wyatt Earp will give a presentation on guns of the Old West. One of American historys most charismatic and influential American Indians will be represented in the Chautauqua of Sarah Winnemucca. Winnemucca spent time mastering the English language while living with the William Ormsby family in Genoa. She later became the first Native American woman known to secure a copyright and to publish in the English language when she wrote Life Among the Paiutes: Their Wrongs and Claims.

The Comstock Civil war reenactors will reside in their authentic camp throughout the event at Walleys. The canvas tented camp features demonstrations from a doctor, a chaplain and Sutler (items of the period). The re-enactors were recently acknowledged for their commitment to authenticity when they were invited to man cannon at the 149th Gettysburg reenactment. In addition to their participation in Harriets Civil War Dinner and Ball on Friday, the Comstock Civil War reenactors will perform two battles on Saturday, with their final battle just before dusk, capturing the glow of the artillery. The events finale, an evening concert featuring regional favorites David John and the Comstock Cowboys, kicks off at 7:15 pm.
