12th Annual LUNAFEST® Kicks Off Season with Jean Kilbourne

  (September 27, 2012)

San Francisco, Calif. (PRWEB) September 27, 2012

LUNAFEST®, a national fundraising film festival that showcases short films by, for, and about women, announces nine distinct films chosen for this years program, which premieres in San Francisco on September 27th at the Herbst Theater. Jean Kilbourne, internationally recognized author, filmmaker and for her work on the image of women in media and film, is this years honorary guest to launch the festival. From animation to documentary style, this years program covers a breadth of stories, including a pioneering woman, self-acceptance, body image, friendships, overcoming heartbreak and mother-daughter relationships.

LUNAFEST provides a platform for women to share our stories and experiences from our unique perspectives. This is especially important because the entertainment industry so often misrepresents and marginalizes women, said Jean Kilbourne. Im excited to be involved with LUNAFEST and raise money and awareness for the Breast Cancer Fund, an organization that focuses on the prevention of a disease that has personally touched me and several of my friends.

LUNAFEST will travel to more than 150 venues throughout the country, including New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, and Austin, from September to June. All net proceeds from each screening raises funds and awareness for womens nonprofit organizations. Eighty-five percent of profits go to local nonprofit organizations, while the remaining 15 percent goes to LUNAs primary cause partner, the Breast Cancer Fund, an organization dedicated to identifying and advocating for the elimination of environmental causes of the disease.

Since its inception in 2000, LUNAFEST has raised more than $556,000 for the Breast Cancer Fund and over $1 million for womens organizations across the country, while raising hope and awareness for womens issues. LUNAFEST is created and funded by LUNA®, the maker of the Whole Nutrition Bar for Women®.
