(Jan. 05, 2004) -- Macromedia today announced Director MX 2004, an update to the company's interactive authoring environment. The new version adds several new features, including cross-platform projector creation and JavaScript support. It will be available in February for Mac OS X and Windows.

Director MX 2004 is an interactive authoring environment for producing multimedia presentations for the Web, CD, DVD and kiosks. The latest release brings a major change to scripting functionality, adding support for JavaScript in addition to Lingo--including the ability to mix and match the two.[an error occurred while processing this directive]

And it adds to its video capabilities, allowing authors to stream content in QuickTime, Real, Windows Media, Flash and DVD-Video formats. With the new DVD-Video functionality, users can embed, play back and control DVD video content within their presentations. And, for cross-platform authors, the new version for the first time offers the ability to author Macintosh (Mac OS X and Mac OS 9) and Windows projectors within a single version of the application.

Other new features include:

  • Enhanced media format import support, including QuickTime, Windows Media, Real, DVD-Video Flash and various audio, still image and 3D formats;
  • Customizable workspace, including Stage and movie in a window docking, as well as the ability to modify the Tool palette;
  • Support for Flash MX 2004 files and components (comes bundled with various pre-defined components, including interface and media components);
  • Sprite and channel naming for moving, sorting and tracking sprites and channels without having to rewrite code;
  • Saves projector settings on a per-project basis;
  • Integration with other Macromedia MX 2004 applications, including Flash and Fireworks, as well as Macromedia server products, such as Coldfusion MX and the FLash Communication Server MX;
  • New reference panel for help, behavior and Xtra descriptions and JavaScript and Lingo references.
