iO Film Finishes Nike's Minotaur of Atlanta Spot North Hollywood, CA (Dec. 22, 2003) -- iO Film has entered into the television commercial arena. Today, Tim Krubsack, Managing Partner of iO Film, announced the company has finished a Nike spot for Portland-based ad agency Wieden & Kennedy for their "Nikelab" project. The new 15-second spot, entitled "Nike-Minotaur," pays homage to the old stop-frame animated monster movies of yesteryear and was produced by Screen Novelties of Burbank, CA. The spot casts Falcons' quarterback Michael Vick as "The Minotaur of Atlanta" who battles a three-headed "Hydra" on his way to the Georgia Dome football stadium. The creatures were created as stop-motion puppets, animated, then composited onto live-action plates. The creatures are seen running toward Atlanta's Georgia Dome Football Stadium, and with the aid of the new Nike shoes, the Minotaur beats the Hydra.[an error occurred while processing this directive]
Says iO Film Executive Producer Chip Potter, "We scanned the 16mm footage of the Georgia Dome and the street scenes. This footage provided reference material to Screen Novelties, where Mark Caballero and Seamus Walsh crafted the monsters on green screen and shot them frame-by-frame using a digital still camera. The digital still sequences were then given to Anthony Doublin, the director of photography and effects supervisor, who composited them with the live footage on a Macintosh. He adds, "When the scenes were completed, all of the elements were returned to iO Film. iO's Director of HD Post-Production, John Sterneman, assembled them, added text, color-corrected, and finished the final spot in HD. iO Film ultimately provided a video master for broadcast of the spot." The animation for "The Minotaur of Atlanta" was shot with high-resolution digital still cameras then treated to match the film look of the live-action. "Because we're shooting frame by frame, we can achieve crisper digital images than with motion video," said Walsh. "And that instant feedback allows us to really push the animation."
