Lighting 201: Reflections are Our Friends

Next if you desire you can add a background light to the shot. For this light, I used a Tota light shining on the backdrop. By putting the Tota on the same side as the bounce card, the card can act as a flag and block any stray light from hitting the bottle.

While this looks okay, my preference is to break up the light in some way to create a pattern on the background. You can purchase any number of patterns from lighting companies, but sometimes it is better (and more cost effective) to make your own. The Gobo for this shot is a piece of foam core cut up and placed in front of the Tota.[an error occurred while processing this directive]

The result is an improvement.

Make sure you continue to expose for the main object. If need be you can color the background light by adding a Gel or if it is too bright, add a dimmer or neutral density gel in front of the light.
