Lighting 201: Reflections are Our Friends
Page 3 of 5

With one side of the glass illuminated, it is time to lighten the opposite side. To do this, I took a bounce card (discussed in Lighting 101: Bounce Cards), and positioned it as close to the bottle as possible yet still out of frame.

[an error occurred while processing this directive]The same principle as the Soft Box applies here. The reflection from the card illuminates the bottle, and while softening the shadows on the right side, it also creates another large white reflection for the camera to pick up.

Some of you might want to stop there, but there are actually a few more lights we can add to the scene to really wow up the shot.

Three-point lighting from the 101 series taught us that the Rim or Kicker lights help separate the subject from the background and give a little highlight around the rim of the object. We can do the same thing here by placing a light at about the 2 o’clock position. This Omni light was spotted in and barn doors were used to focus the light so it was shining directly through the glass.

In addition to the nice rim light we get on the back of the bottle, the light shining through the glass gives the object more depth and causes internal reflections to show up.
