Cleaner XL Page 2 of 3 Cleaner XL V. Sorenson Squeeze I recently reviewed Sorenson Squeeze and had really good things to say about it. However, how do the two compete head to head with one another?[an error occurred while processing this directive]In this test, I took four clips from the following Artbeats collections: NASA - The Early Years Aerial Landscapes Reel Fire 2 Cloud Fly-Thrus 2 All of the clips were taken directly from the Artbeats CDs and placed in a watch folder. I then processed the QuickTime files to a downloadable medium (320x240) format with a watermark and filter adjustments. Both applications used the Sorenson 3 codec. The tests were performed on a Faye, my 2.4GHz machine with 1GB of RAM. The times for the batch encode are as follows: Application Time (minutes:seconds) Cleaner XL 3:46 Sorenson Squeeze 3:46 Surprisingly they both finished the task in the exact same amount of time (even on multiple tests). With the same quality, output versatility, and speed, the question you will need to ask yourself is, “Which do I like better?” Based on my short-term tests between the two, I tend to lean more toward cleaner XL than Squeeze. This mainly has to do with how Squeeze deals with watch folders – otherwise I like both apps equally. There is actually one other detail that needs to be pointed out between the two applications and it is quite significant. When setting the codec to be exactly the same between the two applications instead of just using the defaults, the cleaner XL files are slightly larger than the Sorenson Squeeze files. How large of a difference? Not so large as to be troublesome. For example, the Aerial Fly-Thru of the Canyon (90.7MB) was 1.22MB compressed with Sorenson Squeeze, and 1.52MB with cleaner XL. .3MB may not seem like a lot in this day of fast DSL speeds, but if you are compressing for slow dialups, it could present a problem. Again, I need to point out that the default codecs were modified so they two applications were equal. When I ran the Canyon fly thru by itself using the cleaner XL Medium QuickTime default the file size was 1.35MB. Still slightly larger, but not too terrible.
