Alias Releases Maya PLE 5.0 The Maya PLE 5.0 offers most of the features found in the commercial version, including several new technologies, such as a new hardware rendering option for use with the latest generation of graphics cards; a unified rendering workflow; animation enhancements to constraints, forward/inverse kinematics and ghosting; Maya Paint Effects to polygon conversion; and an improved polygon reduction method for making game models and MODs.[an error occurred while processing this directive]The new version also offers enhancements to online help and searching, including a new Beginner's Learning Tool and an online user community center with tutorials, movies and discussions. And it includes a new guide called Extra Learning Resources and a one-hour introductory DVD. The Maya Personal Learning Edition restricts users to non-commercial applications through the display of a watermark on images as well as through the use of a special non-commercial file format. It does not use standard plugins and does not include the Maya API. Maya PLE 5.0 is available now in CD form for $19.95 for Mac OS X and Windows. (It's being sold through the Alias online store as well as at the Siggraph convention this week in San Diego, Calif.) It will also be available as a free download in the fall.
