But what happens if you don’t want to use Interval Recording? There may be times when something is happening quickly enough and there isn’t an interval amount that will work for you. For example, let’s say some storm clouds are rolling in and you want to capture the building thunderhead. Using Interval recording may cause you to miss the very cool dynamics that is going on inside the cloud.

[an error occurred while processing this directive]My suggestion is to go ahead and record the entire process in real time, digitize the footage, and then experiment with Fit to Fill in Final Cut Pro to get a desired clip length.

Fit to Fill allows you to create your own unique time-lapse effects.


These are just two solutions to working with time-lapse footage in Final Cut Pro. If you would like to read how to create time-lapse footage where you would have more control, read my first time-lapse article here.

Remember, using the Interval Recording on your camera may not seem like the ideal solution, but if you are capturing a process that lasts and extremely long time (like the passage of an entire day), using Interval Recording will save you a great deal of tape that will need to be digitized in the end (12 hours of footage V. 30 minutes of footage).

As an endnote, you don’t necessarily have to use Final Cut Pro in order to fix your Interval Recording mess; you can use any NLE program that allows you to do Fit to Fill.
