How To Double Your After Effects Render Speeds

Finally, after you adjust these settings, your "Output To" will change either to "None specified" or something like "Comp 1_[#####].psd." Click on this setting, and make sure the output is set to the Watch Folder you created previously.

When you're ready, click the "Collect" button.

5. Finally, you'll see a dialog for selecting the folder to which the files will be collected. Guess which folder you should select.... That's right, your Watch Folder.

Now, your Render Engine will automatically begin rendering your sequence when it counts down to zero and detects your collected files in the Watch folder. To get the main After Effects application involved in the process, click the Render button in the Render Queue window. Important: The main After Effects application will not begin rendering until you manually click the Render button!

Once you do get these bad boys working, you'll see two separate Render Queue windows showing render progress. (Sometimes they overlap one another, so you will only see one, but you can just drag the topmost window to reveal the second window, if you'd like to watch the progress.)

After the composition finishes rendering, the Render Engine will automatically go back into "Watch" mode, while the main After Effects application will return to normal operation.

Tip: You will experience maximum performance if you have no other applications running at the time of the render and if you keep your Composition window closed during the render in the main After Effects application. Obviously, the more you do on your computer outside of After Effects during the render process, the less of a performance benefit you'll see.
