Avid's Krall Touts Hardware Acceleration

DMN: What's the hardest part of this product line to understand? It's very complex -- is there one stumbling block that people don't seem to be getting?

Krall: Great question. There are a number of people who have believed -- or convinced themselves -- that the world has switched from hardware to software, and that you in fact don't need hardware at all any more. And there are manufacturers who would have you believe that, because often they're platform manufacturers, so it's worth their while to tell you that all you will ever need is a software-based solution. But on the other hand, because video is inherently 10-bit resolution, that's a resolution that's unnatural for software-based systems, because they're either 8-bits or 16-bits. And when you move to 10-bit resolutions on video processing, you dramatically reduce the performance of a host-based system. So what we've done is we've architected our hybrid architecture so that we use hardware acceleration of those components which are much more efficiently done in hardware, and used the full power of the host for all the rest of the features that can be done using software acceleration. And we've also moved to an Open GL standard for our DVEs. So we're leveraging the NVidia growth curve, we're leveraging Moore's Law and the speed of the host processor improvements, and we're also leveraging our expertise in dedicated hardware to give you acceleration that's unmatched.

DMN: Now with all this new technology, this doesn't mean you're going to abandon the Meridien platform -- you're still going to be developing products for that?

Krall: We're still continuing to sell the Meridien platform and continuing releases on Meridien.
