Phoenix Editorial Breaks New Spot for HP Media Center
Page 1 of 1
San Francisco, Calif. (Dec. 09, 2002) -- Phoenix Editorial completed editorial, visual effects and sound design for "Green Room," a new spot promoting the HP Media Center PC via advertising agency Publicis & Hal Riney, San Francisco. The 60-second spot, which began airing November 25, features a slew of celebrities some living, some dead, some suspended in time and space to convey the idea that the HP Media Center PC truly is a multimedia entertainment center where TV, photos, music and video coexist happily together. Bob Frisk from Phoenix edited the spot directed by David Shane at Hungry Man.

[an error occurred while processing this directive]"We had a very funny cast and a very talented director, but to really take advantage of the humor and nuance in the footage, we needed the help of an editor with a great sense of comedic timing. Bob Frisk definitely has that," said Publicis & Hal Riney Head of Production Sam Walsh. "He weeded through tons of footage, found the choicest bits and turned them into a really funny, perfectly paced piece."

To convey the cramped feeling of a green room, where performers held offstage make idle chatter or simply sit in awkward silence, Frisk edited over three hours of footage, some of it so raucously funny, it was painful to cut. "There were scenes when actor Abe Vigota was tossing out one-liner after one-liner, and Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star pitcher Randy Johnson was just keeling over with laughter,² said Frisk. "We had many, many hours of this kind of footage. We had to constantly remind ourselves that this was a waiting room, not a comedy club."

The spot opens in a fluorescent-lit green room, where a motley crew of models, celebrities, rock bands and former presidents sit patiently to be called onstage. This is a world where model Rachel Hunter compliments Abe Lincoln on his fashion sense, and a jail mate lifted off a scratchy black-and-white movie (pulled-off by Phoenix Effects and Design Director Matt Silverman) discusses the implications of sawing a woman in half with Teller, of the magician duo Penn & Teller. These scenes cut from one odd pairing to another, from one conversation to another. Finally, the stage door swings open. Looking up from his clipboard, the producer walks out and calls for the next performer The Flaming Lips. The scene then transitions to the real world, where a man sits in his living room, remote control in hand, clicking through the menu options on his HP Media Center PC. He finally settles on The Flaming Lips video, which fills the computer screen. The spot closes out with the HP logo and tagline, "Invent."
