 | | Motion Mixer makes it simple to combine and edit motions for your character. Click for a larger image | I was able to check out Motion Mixer way back at Siggraph 2000 when it was just going through its final tweaks. Motion Mixer allows you to save, load and mix motions for any character in your piece allowing you to animate in a non-linear fashion. For example, if you have created a walk cycle and a run cycle for a character, you can have the character begin by walking and then make a natural transition to the run and back to the walk. This saves all sorts of headaches. In the past you would have had to re-time the run and walk cycles to get the two to line up correctly. With Motion Mixer you can define a library of all of the different motion characteristics of your virtual actor and then blend them smoothly together. The manual for Motion Mixer is a bit light (see below), but there are several tutorials floating around the Net to help those of you out who have not worked with something similar in other animation programs.

Sasquatch Lite (Saslite) is a hair render plug-in that let’s you create very realistic hair (or fur, or grass) on any object. Sasquatch Lite gives the user control over how long, short, course, or fine the hair will be leading to some very nice results. To have full control of Sasquatch, you will need to purchase the full version from Worley Labs. This is not the first time NewTek has included a lite version as part of their program (think Particle Storm). While some may not like this policy of giving users a watered down version of a plug-in, it does allow a user to work with and get used to the program and generating results that can be used in their work. It then gives the animator a choice if she would like to purchase the full upgrade.
